How do you select and test a conformal coating that is right for your specific application? Or maybe you would like to create your own test specification due to any special characteristics of your device’s operating environment? Or depending on your geographical location, you may also be required to use a different testing specification that is dictated by local authorities.
A widely used method to create an internal specification, is to simply select a conformal coating material that meets an existing specification standard. Such standard could be MIL-I-46058C or IEC-60664. However, you must be careful to ensure that the existing standard that you choose, does indeed meet 100% of your requirements. In such cases, you may have to specify test methods from other existing standards.

There are many standards, here a few common ones for your reference:
Some standards are specific to a physical or mechanical property/attribute, such as adhesion or flammability. Others include a range of properties to test how well a conformal coating performs overall.
Here are some examples:
For example, for automotive applications you may need the following sequence:
Damp Heat, cyclic
Thermal cycle, -40°C to +130°C (read: Thermal Shock blog article)
Corrosive gas test
Damp heat constant
It is unlikely that all the tests that you require for your specific device already exist in one current test standards, however the individual tests will probably exist embedded in current standards. To create your own targeted conformal coating test standard, you need to understand the device’s operating environment demands and select the appropriate test from a range of existing international standards. You have now created a test standard specific to your device that meets international standards.
Qualified Products List (QPL)– There are only two standards that provide QPLs, MIL-I-46058C and UL746E. For all other desired test properties, internal lab testing must be performed. Successful completion will allow you to state that your product meets the standard.
