Who Is Scienscope?

Headquartered in Chino, Calif. in 1995, Scienscope was founded to meet the growing need for reliable general-purpose optical and video inspection solutions for the electronics and PCB industries. The company began with basic stereo zoom microscopes used for SMT inspection and rework of circuit boards and electromechanical assemblies with a commitment to quality, value and support. Customer requirements lead to the evolution from basic stereo microscopes to trinocular microscopes and micro-video optics with CCTV camera systems for more comfortable viewing of applications. Later with the addition of image capture options (analog video capture cards and simple USB cameras) microscopes became valuable tools for documentation and communication of defects, process issues, and solutions. Scienscope has further realized the development of these advancements by adding image capture and digital viewing of applications to all the systems that it provides. In 2001, Scienscope offered its first video coordinate measuring machines because of an expanding customer base with more sophisticated inspection requirements and applications. The company found that more of its customers wanted the ability to measure very small features in addition to their inspection requirements. In keeping with the mission to offer value and quality, machines are designed with a granite base and z-column, steel measuring stages with cross-roller bearings, and precision optics and digital camera. The current product line includes a variety of machine designs and advanced measurement software with an intuitive interface. Additionally, the systems are so user friendly that a dedicated operator is not required.

Scienscope began its most significant new product development in 2000 — micro-focus X-ray — due to increasing popularity of the ball grid array (BGA). Customers could not complete a final inspection with optical or video technology. They had to look through the package to detect voids, cold solder, bridging, opens, etc. Scienscope’s X-Scope line now features several machine platforms to meet the needs of circuit board, medical device, solar panel, metal casting, LED, automotive, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. These platforms include highly flexible semiautomatic offline machines as well as fully automated inline AXI. There is a lot of excitement about the newest platform: the AXI 5100c SMD and through-hole component inspection machines for the inspection of component reels, JEDEC trays, cut tapes in ESD bags, etc. All Scienscope systems offer a range from 90-130 kv micro-focus X-ray tubes (down to 5 micron focal spot), and include high-resolution digital image detectors, programmable motion control (up to six-axis manipulation), and the easiest-to-use, intuitive inspection and measurement software in the industry.

Growth Leads to Expansion

In addition to the offices in China and the Kunshan factory, the company recently expanded its facility in Chino by adding an additional 6,000 ft2. The new space primarily is used to expand the company’s demo room. Todd O’Neil, Global Business Development Manager and National Sales Manager, explained, “The need for more space is simply because of our rapid growth and expected continuous growth.”

Scienscope’s reputation for quality and reliability has resulted in the need for additional space. Expansions and new buildings are in the process. Customers know that Scienscope’s easy-to-use, advanced X-ray systems will not just meet but actually exceed today’s challenges.

O’Neil added, “With the expansion, our total facility is now approximately 18,000 ft2, providing enough room to always have our latest technology on display, and ready for customer demonstrations on the spot. We still have plans to open another demo area in the Northern California Bay area in the coming months.”

The addition as well as expansion plan are a direct result of Scienscope’s soaring growth and success throughout the globe. Overall sales revenue grew by 153 percent in 2015 with respect to that of 2014, and more than 300 percent since 2013. O’Neil attributes this record growth to having very reliable, easy-to-use, advanced X-ray systems designed to meet a wide variety of applications and manufacturing quality requirements with the most cost effective pricing.
